Inclusive Camp" for children with disabilities and their families offers programs throughout Japan to foster social skills and self-confidence through outdoor activities in nature. In the 10 years since its establishment, approximately 3,000 children and their families have participated in the program, which operates on the principle of "having fun together regardless of disabilities.
Camp Features
System for dealing with diverse disabilities: Specialist staff (occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and special-needs teachers) are on hand to deal with children with a variety of disabilities, including autistic spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, motor disabilities, and audiovisual disabilities. In advance, each family is interviewed in detail about their child's characteristics and support needs, and an individualized support plan is created. For example, a "quiet corner" is provided for children who are sensitive to sound, and activities with assistive devices are offered for children who have difficulty with exercise.
Activities:
Nature Experience": By collecting pebbles in the river and observing plants in the forest, participants learn about nature's attractions while stimulating all five senses.
Group games": Develop interpersonal skills through ball games that require teamwork and handicrafts that require cooperation to complete.
Presentation": On the last day of the camp, children present what they have learned during the camp in front of their families (singing, dancing, displaying crafts, etc.) and experience a sense of accomplishment.
Enhanced family support: A "social event" for parents is held while their children are participating in camp activities. Provides an opportunity for families in the same situation to share experiences and consult with experts. Many families have participated multiple times, with many commenting, "I feel a little less anxious about raising my child."
Camp site features: All camp sites are barrier-free, with wide aisles for easy wheelchair access. Bedrooms and restrooms are also equipped with facilities suitable for children with disabilities. Meals are prepared in consideration of allergies, with menus tailored to individual needs. In case of emergencies during the night, doctors and nurses are always available.
